New Year’s Detox

I LOVE the holiday season and part of the reason I love it so much is that we all have carte blanche to do a little guilt-free binging. Huge boxes of chocolates are lying around, beckoning us as we innocently walk by. Nights on the town, eating, drinking and then eating and drinking some more. And holiday feasts, with second and third helpings and lots of holiday bubbly and holiday wine.

But what happens when January rolls around and you’ve got a depleted bank account and a bulging muffin top?

It’s Detox time.

I found an ultra-healthy recipe a couple of months ago and have been saving it for the January bulges and blues. So, if you want to get back on track fast, blend this for breakfast for a couple of weeks and I guarantee you’ll have your waistline and your energized self back in no time.

2014 Power Detox Smoothie

  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 6 kale leaves
  • 1 cucumber, peeled
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 2 organic apples
  • 1 cup blackberries (or blueberries)
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • juice from 1/2 lemon

Blend. Drink. Glow.



The Reward

The long awaited “End of Cleanse” dinner is here!

A plate of organic greens topped with delicious grilled wild salmon, a glass of icy cold, dark, micro-brewery beer on a seaside patio with a magnificent sunset to watch.

It’s been a tough week at times but a really great experience in green, raw living. I’m feeling healthier and more energized than I have in quite a while. And now it’s time to celebrate.


Day Five – The Juice Truck

Who’s my best friend on Day Five of the cleanse? The Juice Truck in Gastown, that’s who!

This big, happy, watermelon-coloured truck, at the corner of Abbott and Water, has some of the most delicious, freshest and healthiest juices in town. With ingredients like organic cucumber, kale, wheat grass, ginger and mint, it’s a mobile pharmacy that will cure your ills.

Hung-over? How about a ginger, lemon, cayenne wellness shot. This shot will wake you up and balance your electrolytes fast! Having a mid-day slump? A Matcha tea, blueberry, banana smoothie will give you a nice, subtle hit of energy. Suffering from an upset tummy? The Remedy green juice goodness will help make it better. Happily, the list goes on and on.

These yummy, uber-healthy concoctions make me feel nourished, satisfied and so happy that I’m doing a really good thing for my body.

Day Three – Spring Cleaning

Day three of the juice cleanse and it looks like my body is busily cleaning house.

I’m blowing my nose…alot. I’m having to run to the washroom….alot. So much so that I’m starting to wonder where all of this stuff is coming from. Has it just been hanging out in my intestines forever??? I recently read an article about how meat eaters can have a couple of pounds of decaying flesh stuck in their intestines, causing all sorts of bacteria and parasites to flourish. Eeeeek!!! But thank goodness, if that’s the case, it’s all coming out now.

Okay, that said, I also had an intense dream about bacon last night. Bacon! I don’t even eat bacon but that’s all I could think about for the entire morning. Bacon, bacon, bacon. This afternoon I went for a walk along the beach, to take my mind off bacon, and it seemed like the aroma of freshly fried fish and chips was everywhere!!! My stomach got really grumbly and I became obsessed with the idea of devouring an order or two of fish and chips immediately. The only thing that stopped me from doing so was the fear of having my cleansing buddies walk by and catch me on the patio of the fish restaurant with ketchup smeared on my face and a piece of salmon hanging out of my mouth. Not wanting to go there, I regained my composure and walked home, passing all the vendors and restaurant patios without giving them even a sideways glance!

Tonight is going to be a very mellow, restful night. I’m staying at home and away from temptation. My yummy evening/dinner juice is one of my all-time faves, called Sunny G. Hopefully this will put me back on track…
